Manchester Airport to the City Centre

Manchester Airport is one of the best-connected airports in Britain for its city: the station is on the airport site, joined to every terminal by the covered Skylink walkway, and the ride into town is shorter than the walk through some airports.

Train: the default

From Manchester Airport station, trains reach Manchester Piccadilly in 13 to 18 minutes, with several departures an hour through the day, run by TransPennine Express and Northern. Piccadilly is on the edge of the city centre, with tram, bus and taxi connections onward. Buy tickets from machines, online or by contactless tap; off-peak singles are inexpensive by airport-rail standards.

Tram: cheaper, slower

Metrolink trams also terminate at the airport, running through the southern suburbs into the city. The tram costs less than the train but takes considerably longer, so it suits unhurried travellers, stops along the line, and times when a train is not due. The stop is at The Station interchange, the same covered walk from the terminals.

Taxi and ride-hailing

A taxi to the city centre takes about 20 minutes outside rush hour. Licensed taxis wait at ranks outside the terminals, and ride-hailing apps pick up from designated zones; expect a significant premium over the train for one passenger, and rough parity for a family with luggage.

At night

Rail and tram services pause overnight, so a late landing or a pre-dawn city departure means a car. Better still, remove the journey: the airport’s hotels put you two minutes from Terminal 2 on foot (Holiday Inn, ibis budget, TRIBE) or on the covered Skylink walkway (Radisson Blu), and the Clayton’s free shuttle runs all night.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way from Manchester Airport to the city centre?

The train: 13 to 18 minutes from Manchester Airport station to Manchester Piccadilly, with several departures an hour through the day. The station is part of The Station interchange, linked to all terminals by the covered Skylink walkway.

Do trains run all night?

No. Train and tram services thin out late in the evening and pause overnight, with the first departures from around dawn. Between roughly midnight and 5:00 am, a taxi or ride-hailing car is the realistic option.
